Iryna Rybalka

Your organization field and mission

Our organization operates in the field of early childhood education. Our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive, and stimulating environment where children can learn, grow, and develop key life skills. We integrate simple STEM activities into everyday learning, encouraging children to explore, experiment, solve problems, and develop creativity through play and discovery.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization

As a psychologist in a preschool educational institution, I support children’s emotional well-being, social development, and mental health. I work closely with children, teachers, and parents to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. I also help implement activities that promote resilience, communication skills, emotional intelligence, and successful child development.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM began while working in early childhood education. By observing children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring the world around them, I realized how powerful hands-on experiments, construction activities, and problem-solving tasks can be. STEM helps children develop critical thinking, creativity, and confidence through play and discovery.

My first role models were educators who inspired children to learn, explore, and ask questions. Today, I am inspired by innovative teachers, psychologists, and STEM education specialists who create engaging learning environments and encourage children to think creatively and independently. Above all, children themselves are my greatest inspiration—their curiosity and eagerness to discover new things motivate me to keep learning and growing professionally.

Your studies

One of my biggest challenges during my studies was gaining practical experience and confidence in working with young children. Through internships, teamwork, and continuous learning, I developed strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, while adapting to modern approaches in early childhood education.

Believe in your abilities and never stop learning. Education and psychology are fields where empathy, creativity, and dedication make a real difference in people’s lives. Be open to new ideas, develop your skills continuously, and do not be afraid of challenges. Every experience helps you grow both professionally and personally. Most importantly, follow your passion and remember that your work can positively impact the future of many children and families.

You at work

Our preschool implements DEIS principles by promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and safeguarding in everyday practice. We ensure equal access to quality early childhood education for all children, including those with additional needs, and create a supportive, child-centred environment. We also integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities through age-appropriate play-based learning, such as simple experiments, building activities, and exploration of nature, which help develop curiosity, problem-solving, and critical thinking from an early age.

I am most proud of creating a positive and supportive learning environment where children feel confident, engaged, and motivated to learn. Seeing children develop their social, emotional, and cognitive skills, while building strong partnerships with families, is my greatest professional achievement.

Your point of view

Technology empowers women by providing equal access to education, information, and professional opportunities. In early childhood education, digital tools help educators improve learning quality, create inclusive classrooms, and support children’s development more effectively. It also allows women to build digital skills, access online training, and participate in STEM fields, increasing their independence and career growth.

I would advise girls and women to believe in their abilities, stay curious, and continuously develop both pedagogical and digital skills. Working in early childhood education requires patience, creativity, and empathy, but it is also very rewarding. Engaging in STEM-based learning activities and modern teaching methods can make their work more innovative and effective.

By 2030, I would like to see full inclusion and equality in early childhood education, where every child—regardless of background or ability—has equal opportunities to succeed. I hope DEIS principles are fully integrated into daily practice, with strong support for teachers, increased use of inclusive and STEM-based approaches, and better access to resources for all educational settings.

To finish with

My core values are respect, inclusion, lifelong learning, and responsibility. I believe in treating every child and colleague with dignity, supporting equal opportunities, and continuously improving my skills to provide high-quality education. I also value teamwork, empathy, and openness to innovation in teaching and learning.

In my professional context, I expect challenges such as adapting to rapid technological changes in education, maintaining a balance between administrative duties and quality teaching, and meeting the diverse needs of children with different learning abilities. Another challenge will be continuous professional development while managing workload and staying motivated.

By 2030, I hope to have grown into a highly skilled and confident early childhood education professional with strong digital competencies. I aim to actively use innovative and inclusive teaching methods, contribute to educational projects in my community, and possibly take on a mentoring or leadership role to support other educators. I also hope to continue developing professionally through training and international collaboration.

With critical thinking and critical acting tech is essential to promote women in the field!

Do it despite what people say. Remember two things 1. do not take criticism from someone you would not take advice from and 2. When someone give you an advice it comes from their own perspective, not yours. So when they say ‘it is impossible’ what they mean is that it is impossible for THEM not for you. Be loud and ‘a productive pain in the a**’.

People to be screened on their values and their stance on DEI and on the importance of gender and other respesentatiton in the field. We need a time where if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem isn’t only spoken about but implemented in action. Period leaves are a must and paid leave for both parents not only the mother.

To finish with

True meritocracy, educate all men on gender issues and how this is primarily is man’s problem to solve. Gender equality and representation in all level of hierarchy.

To fight the status quo, to fight so that the women after me do not have to. To create an environment in my workplace where women feel safe, heart, and understood, where they can flourish and become the best version of themselves.

I hope to be in an even stronger position so that my voice can travel father and initiate discussion and actionable decision making to change the field in a more inclusive space for all.

Your interest in STEM

During my studiesMy interest in STEM was born during my studies as an ichthyologist. Through studying fish biology and aquatic ecosystems, I developed a deep appreciation for environmental science and the complexity of natural systems. Working closely with ecological research helped me understand how scientific methods can be applied to real-world environmental challenges. This experience sparked my curiosity not only about biological systems but also about the broader scientific principles that shape our natural world.

My first role models were the scientists I watched in documentaries while growing up. I was inspired by the way they traveled the world, explored new environments, and shared their discoveries with the public. What impressed me most was not only their knowledge, but their passion for educating others and contributing to a better understanding of our planet.

At present, I am deeply inspired by my supervisor, Helen (Eleni) Kalogianni. She is an exceptional scientist who generously shares her knowledge and actively supports my professional development. Through her guidance, she has helped me grow scientifically and has given me valuable opportunities that contribute to my future career evolution.

Your studies

During my studies in ichthyology, my biggest challenge was strengthening my quantitative and statistical skills, as environmental research often requires handling complex datasets. At first, this was demanding, but I worked on improving through extra practice and guidance, which significantly increased my confidence in data analysis.

One of my main strengths was my passion for environmental science and field research, which kept me motivated even during demanding periods. The competitive nature of research opportunities was sometimes challenging, but it pushed me to become more disciplined, adaptable, and resilient.

You at work

At HCMR and within IMBRIW, DEIS principles are reflected both in our research mission and institutional culture.
In terms of Sustainability, our core work focuses on the conservation and sustainable management of marine and inland water ecosystems, directly contributing to environmental protection and responsible resource use. Regarding Diversity and Inclusion, HCMR promotes interdisciplinary and international collaboration, bringing together scientists from different backgrounds and expertise. The institute also engages actively with local communities, stakeholders, and schools, ensuring that scientific knowledge is accessible and inclusive. In terms of Equity, early-career researchers are supported through participation in international projects, mobility opportunities, and mentorship within research teams, fostering professional growth and equal development opportunities.

What I am most proud of in my work is the professional respect I have earned from my colleagues and supervisors. As a female scientist working extensively in demanding field conditions in rivers and remote environments, gaining recognition for my competence, resilience, and scientific contribution has been particularly meaningful to me. I am also very proud of receiving a scholarship from WWF Hellas to work on the conservation of a critically endangered endemic freshwater species in Greece. This opportunity marked the beginning of my PhD journey, which I have just started, and represents both recognition of my work and a significant milestone in my academic development.

Your point of view

Technology can empower women by increasing access to education, information, and professional opportunities. Digital platforms make it easier for women to gain skills, participate in global networks, and access scientific knowledge regardless of geographical or social barriers. It also enables flexibility in work environments, which can help balance professional and personal responsibilities. In STEM fields especially, technology creates new career pathways and gives women the tools to lead research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Importantly, technology can amplify women’s voices — through communication platforms, data transparency, and visibility in professional spaces — helping to challenge stereotypes and promote equality. However, true empowerment requires inclusive design and equal access, ensuring that women are not only users of technology but also creators and decision-makers in shaping it.

By 2030, I would like to see DEIS principles fully integrated into environmental research and field-based science — not as policies on paper, but as everyday practice.
I would like to see more women in leadership roles within research institutes, especially in field-intensive disciplines. Fieldwork should no longer be perceived as gender-biased, but as an inclusive space where competence and collaboration matter most. I also hope to see stronger support systems for early-career researchers — transparent funding opportunities, fair evaluation processes, and mentorship structures that ensure equal professional growth. In terms of inclusion, I would like science to become more connected with society, involving local communities more actively in conservation and decision-making processes.

And finally, sustainability should go beyond research topics and be reflected in how institutions operate — from responsible resource use to long-term environmental accountability. By 2030, I would like DEIS to be embedded in the culture of our sector, shaping not only who participates in science, but how science is conducted and shared.

To finish with

My core values are integrity, resilience, curiosity, and responsibility.

  • Integrity is fundamental to me, both scientifically and personally. I believe in honest research, transparency, and taking responsibility for the impact of our work on society and the environment.
  • Resilience has shaped my journey, especially through demanding fieldwork and competitive academic environments. I believe challenges are opportunities for growth.
  • Curiosity drives my scientific path. The desire to understand natural systems and protect biodiversity is at the heart of my work.
  • And finally, responsibility, toward ecosystems, future generations, and the communities affected by environmental decisions. Science, for me, is not only about discovery but about contributing meaningfully to sustainability and conservation

One of my future challenges will be maintaining a healthy balance between personal life and professional growth. As I advance in my career, especially within research and field-based science, the demands can be intense and time-consuming.
I want to continue evolving academically and professionally, while also preserving space for personal well-being and meaningful relationships. I believe long-term success in science requires sustainability not only in ecosystems, but also in our own lives.
For me, the challenge is not choosing between career and personal life, but learning how to build both in a balanced and intentional way.
