Your organization field and mission:

AX Group is a leading diversified Maltese group operating across key sectors including hospitality, healthcare and care services, development, construction and restoration, real estate, and renewable energy. Founded in 1975, the Group has built a strong reputation for delivering high‑quality, innovative projects that add lasting value to the communities and industries it serves. AX Group’s mission is to leverage its entrepreneurial skills to create sustainable, high‑quality developments by inspiring its people to learn from the past and embrace the future with courage and optimism, while remaining firmly committed to building communities and leaving a positive, long‑term legacy.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

As Chief Technology Officer of AX Group, I am responsible for defining and delivering the Group’s technology and digital transformation strategy across all business sectors. My role encompasses IT operations, cybersecurity, data and analytics, enterprise systems, and emerging technologies, ensuring that technology enables operational excellence, enhances customer experience, and supports sustainable growth. I work closely with executive management and business leaders to align technology investments with strategic objectives, while strengthening governance, resilience, and innovation across the Group’s technology landscape.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM, particularly engineering, started at a very early age, well before tertiary education. I do not remember wanting any other career except engineering and this interest was driven by a strong affinity for Mathematics and Physics during my school years. I formally pursued this interest when I entered the University of Malta in 1988, enrolling in an Electrical Engineering degree. At that time, computing and IT degree options were limited. Engineering was the most direct academic pathway into technology, with the opportunity to specialise during the later years of study.

My role models are strong women in leadership—women who do not shy away from industries or professions traditionally perceived as male‑dominated. They are women who do not see their gender as a barrier, but rather as irrelevant to their ambition, and who continue to push boundaries and break glass ceilings.

Your studies

My biggest challenge during my studies was the limited availability of specialised STEM degrees offered at the time.

Choose STEM because it excites you, not because it fits a stereotype. Be confident in your abilities, stay curious, and do not allow perceptions of “male‑dominated” fields to define or limit your ambitions. Seek out mentors and role models, ask questions, and be prepared to work hard—STEM rewards perseverance and critical thinking. Most importantly, believe that you belong. Your perspective, skills, and voice are needed, and they will help shape better, more inclusive solutions for the future.

You at work

AX Group embeds diversity, equity, inclusion and sustainability through a structured ESG framework overseen by a cross‑functional ESG Committee and supported by its role as a founding member of the Malta ESG Alliance, ensuring strong governance and national collaboration. Environmentally, the Group invests in renewable energy, energy‑efficient buildings, waste reduction, water conservation and sustainable procurement, with flagship hospitality properties achieving international sustainability certification. Socially, AX Group promotes inclusive and fair workplaces, balanced leadership representation, employee wellbeing initiatives such as the Staff Solidarity Fund, and inclusive recruitment and development practices. Beyond the organisation, AX Group delivers community impact through the AX Foundation, supporting individuals with social and learning challenges, and through ongoing charitable and community initiatives, reflecting a long‑term commitment to responsible growth, people, and the environment.

What I am most proud of is having transformed technology at AX Group from a support function into a strategic business enabler. Over the past years, I have led the modernisation of the Group’s IT infrastructure and cybersecurity foundations, ensuring stability, resilience, and readiness for growth, while significantly strengthening governance and risk management. In parallel, I have driven a clear digital and data strategy—introducing AI capabilities, rolling out tools and establishing a Group‑wide data and analytics vision—to enable better decision‑making and operational efficiency. Equally important to me has been building a strong, future‑ready IT organisation, through restructuring, succession planning, and key appointments that empower people to lead and collaborate as one Group team. Together, these achievements have positioned AX Group with a secure, scalable, and innovation‑driven technology platform that supports both today’s operations and the Group’s long‑term ambitions.

Your point of view

Technology opens access to education and careers by lowering traditional barriers to entry into STEM through digital skills, flexible learning paths, and diverse entry routes into technology roles, allowing women to pursue careers aligned with their interests and abilities. It creates visibility and representation, enabling women to act as role models, share their journeys, and inspire future generations through digital platforms, industry talks, and initiatives such as Girls in ICT and Women in ICT programmes.

Don’t see your gender as a limitation—be curious, keep learning, and take on challenges with confidence; your perspective is a strength the technology sector needs.

By 2030, I would like to see a technology sector where diversity, equity, inclusion and sustainability are no longer treated as initiatives, but as standard practice—where women are equally represented at all levels, particularly in technical and leadership roles; where career progression is based on capability and potential rather than bias; where flexible, inclusive working models are the norm; and where technology is designed responsibly, ethically and sustainably, reflecting the needs of a truly diverse society.

To finish with

I value integrity, continuous learning, inclusion, and responsible leadership—using technology and innovation to create sustainable impact while empowering people to reach their full potential.

My future challenges lie in leading large‑scale digital and AI‑driven transformation responsibly, balancing innovation with governance, security, and regulation, influencing change across a complex organisation, and developing the next generation of leaders—while remaining resilient and sustainable in an increasingly demanding professional environment.

By 2030, I hope my career will have evolved from leading technology delivery to shaping enterprise‑wide transformation and governance, where technology, data, AI and sustainability are fully embedded into how organisations operate and make decisions. Building on my current role as Chief Technology Officer at AX Group, I see my impact expanding beyond IT into strategic leadership, influencing business direction, ethical AI adoption, data governance, and long‑term value creation across multiple sectors. I also hope to play a stronger role in mentoring future leaders, particularly women in technology, and contributing at board and policy level to ensure that innovation is responsible, inclusive, and sustainable. Ultimately, success for me by 2030 would be measured not only by systems delivered, but by resilient organisations, empowered people, and lasting impact.
